Hispanic Community January 2018 Salvadorans Fear Their Country Not Prepared for Returnees [Beyond Education] El Salvador is preparing to receive the nearly 200,000 Salvadorans who may have to return following the Trump administration's decision to lift their temporary protected status next year. Salvadorans who have stayed in the U.S. with temporary protected status would have to leave by Sept. 9, 2019, unless Congress comes up with a solution allowing them to stay.
Global January 2018 Coppin State U Senior Starts GoFundMe Campaign Raising More Than $26K for Students in Need [On a Positive Note in Education] After some Baltimore public school students had to wear their coats and hats in cold classrooms amid severe winter weather, Coppin State University senior Samierra Jones started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for space heaters, hats, coats and gloves. By Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had collected more than $26,000.
Hispanic Community January 2018 The Latest: US to End Special Protections for Salvadorans [Beyond Education] Officials say the Trump administration is ending special protections for Salvadoran immigrants, forcing nearly 200,000 to leave the country or face deportation. El Salvador is the fourth country whose citizens have lost Temporary Protected Status under President Donald Trump. They have by far been the largest beneficiaries of the program, which provides humanitarian relief for foreigners whose countries are hit with natural disasters or other strife.

Global January 2018 Record Number Earn Bachelor's Degrees from Virginia Higher Education Institutions Research released Friday by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia shows that students earned a total of 54,508 bachelor's degrees in the 2016-2017 school year, with the majority — at nearly 38,000— conferred by the state's public colleges. More than 31,000 of the degrees were obtained by in-state students.
