In the aftermath of recent school shootings, a familiar pattern has played out in the debate over guns. Gun-control advocates push for tougher laws, including universal background checks. The NRA and many Republican leaders insist the root of the problem is not guns but a range of issues such as mental health, school security, video games and excessive prescriptions of attention-deficit disorder drugs.

Hillary Clinton is receiving a medal from Harvard University for her leadership and human rights work. The former first lady, U.S. senator, secretary of state and Democratic presidential candidate will be awarded the Radcliffe Medal on Friday. The university says it honors those who have had a "transformative impact on society."

AbbVie Donates $100 Million To Strengthen Access To Healthcare, Housing For Hurricane-Ravaged Puerto Rico [On A Positive Note Beyond Education]

AbbVie, a research-based global biopharmaceutical company, announced this week a donation of $100 million to two organizations, Direct Relief and Habitat for Humanity International, to strengthen access to healthcare and housing in Puerto Rico. The organizations will receive $50 million each. This donation is an extension of the more than $4 million AbbVie provided following the unprecedented natural disasters of 2017.

Family Of Teen Killed In Shooting Launches UConn Scholarship [Education News]

The parents of a student killed in the mass shooting at a Florida high school have started a scholarship at the University of Connecticut in his memory. The Hartford Courant reported Tuesday Max Schachter and his wife, Caryn DeSacia, have launched a scholarship in honor of their 14-year-old son, Alex Schachter, who was killed in the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Trump To Meet With Families Of Victims Of Texas Shooting [Education News]

President Donald Trump will meet with families of the victims of a Texas school shooting that left 10 people dead. Trump is traveling to Texas Thursday. The White House says he'll meet with families of victims as well as community members after the shooting at Santa Fe High School on May 18. Eight students and two substitute teachers were killed.

Florida School Shooting Suspect Foretold Intention In Videos [Education News]

In chilling cellphone videos, the suspect in a February massacre at a Florida high school announced his intention to become the next school shooter. The three videos released by prosecutors were found on the cellphone of suspect Nikolas Cruz after the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people and injured 17 others.

U Of I, Microsoft Help Students With Autism Pursue Careers [Education News]

The University of Illinois and Microsoft are launching a new partnership to help students with autism pursue science and technology careers. Microsoft is investing $200,000 in the Accessibility Lighthouse Program, which started Monday. Harold Javid of Microsoft says the partnership will use advances in technology to provide opportunities for students with a range of disabilities.
