Wounded Students From Parkland School Shooting To Get $1.63M [Education News]

The families of the 17 victims killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting will each receive $400,000 from a $10.5 million fund. Eighteen of the injured survivors will receive $1.63 million. The Broward Education Foundation and a steering committee for the victims announced Monday the breakdown of the funds that were raised through a GoFundMe campaign. Nearly 37,000 individuals and companies donated to the fund.

Students To Pay Hundreds More Per Semester To Attend Southern University System [Education News]

Southern University System students in Louisiana will pay hundreds of dollars more a semester in the upcoming school year, to generate $4.2 million for campuses, under a package of fee hikes approved by the system governing board Thursday. Fee increases on students are rankling lawmakers, who protected Louisiana's colleges from budget cuts for the 2018-19 school year by renewing part of an expiring sales tax last month.

Dozens Of Immigrant Children Will Be Reunited With Parents [Beyond Education]

Dozens of immigrant children will be released from detention centers and reunited with their parents Tuesday. A government lawyer said Monday at least 54 children under the age of 5 would join their parents by a court-ordered deadline, only about half the 100 or so children covered by the order. The Trump administration was working on final background checks for another five children ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

Daring Rescue Saves All 12 Boys, Soccer Coach From Thai Cave [Beyond Education]

All 12 boys and their soccer coach have been rescued from a flooded cave in northern Thailand, the Thai navy SEALs said Tuesday, ending an 18-day ordeal that riveted people around the world. The SEALs, who were central to the rescue effort, said on their Facebook page that the remaining four boys and their 25-year-old coach were all brought out safely Tuesday.
