UMaine System Increases Support For 'Early College' Program

The University of Maine System is currently expanding their Early College program with enrollment in the program increasing from 1,500 in 2015 to 2,800 students this year. The program allows students in high school to take classes for college credit.

CSUSM To Increase Number Of Latino And Latina Teachers

California State University San Marcos has received a $2.7 million grant to increase the number of Latino and Latina teachers. Teachers across the nation do not measure up to the demographics of the students they are teaching including San Diego County. Hispanic students in particular make up 48 percent and only 20 percent reported their race or ethnicity according last year’s state data.

Rutgers Receives $4.2M Federal Grant

The Rutgers School of Health Professions has just received a $4.2 million federal grant. In conjunction with a new effort by the U.S. Department Health and Human Services to improve mental health services nationwide, the grant will train mental health practitioners.

A gunman killed 12 people before killing himself at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Southern California. The attack occurred during “college night” at the bar, and the Borderline Bar & Grill is a popular hangout for California Lutheran University students.

Justice Ginsburg, 85, Hospitalized

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized after falling in her office at the Supreme Court, resulting in her fracturing three ribs. In her absence while she is at Washington University Hospital in Washington, the Supreme Court is moving forward with a ceremony welcoming new Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Both President Donald Trump and new acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker are expected to attend.

41 Latinos In Congress, 2 Races Still Undecided

Although two races remain undecided, the number of Latinos who will be serving in Congress in 2019 will be rising to at least 41. There were 44 Latino Democratic candidates who ran in the midterm elections, and 33 of those 44 won. There were also 15 Latino Republican candidates who ran, and of those six won.

The Watershed Addiction Treatment Programs Offers $6K in Scholarships

The Watershed Addiction Treatment Programs has announced that it is offering six scholarships totally $6,000 to students currently enrolled at an accredited university or college. These scholarships are: a Health Care Scholarship, an Addiction Science Scholarship and an Addiction Recovery Scholarship.

U Of Missouri-Kansas City Adds $20M In Scholarships

The University of Missouri-Kansas City is partnering with the nonprofit KC Scholars, allowing the university to expand its current scholarship program. Because of this new partnership, the school expects to provide 400 more scholarships specifically to low- and moderate-income students.

Rutgers To Offer Master’s Degree Program In Forensic Science

Rutgers University-Camden will start offering a master’s degree program in forensic science in the fall of 2019. They are the first institution of higher education in New Jersey to offer the forensic science MSFS program. The new program will cover theory, concepts and the practical uses of biology, chemistry and biochemistry.

U Of Texas Receives $3M Gift

The University of Texas Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management has received a $3 million gift from North Texas real estate luminaires Donna and Herb Weitzman. The gift will create the Herbert D. Weitzman Institute for Real Estate. Scholarships will be available for eligible undergraduate finance and administration students with a concentration on real estate.
