UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship Program™ Announces 2016 Recipients

UCB, Inc. announced 40 recipients of the 2016 UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship, recognizing outstanding individuals affected by epilepsy who are pursuing higher education as part of their effort to achieve their dreams and goals.  Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition affecting approximately three million people in the U.S. and 40 million people worldwide. Over the past 12 years, UCB has awarded nearly 400 hundred scholarships totaling $1.9 million to people whose lives have been directly affected by epilepsy. This includes not only those living with epilepsy, but also their family members and others involved in their care, who are critically important partners in successfully managing epilepsy.

UMass-Amherst Capital Campaign Surpasses Goal, Raises $379M

The University of Massachusetts Amherst has raised $379 million in the largest capital campaign in state public higher education history, easily surpassing the $300 million goal. The state's flagship campus announced Monday that more than 103,000 donors contributed to the UMass Rising Campaign, which brought in the five largest gifts in university history. The campaign launched in 2010 officially closed June 30, a year ahead of schedule. About $108 million was raised for the university's permanent endowment and another $164 million was raised for academic and research programs, $67 million more than the goal. The campaign helped establish more than 24 new permanent professorships. Some of the money will be used for student scholarships and infrastructure.

St. John's Receives 2 Record $25M Donations

St. John's College has received two $25 million donations in one day, with each gift enough to break the school's previous record for its largest single contribution. The Capital newspaper (http://bit.ly/2frDeON ) reports alumni Ron Fielding, a 1970 graduate, and Warren Spector, a 1981 graduate, announced they would each give $25 million to the college during the school's Board of Visitors and Governors meeting in Annapolis on Saturday.

University Providing Aid to 110 Flood-affected Students

A south Louisiana university says its distributing $65,000 to help 110 of its students overcome financial hardships brought on by the August floods. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette made the announcement in a Monday news release. DeWayne Bowie, vice president for Enrollment Management at ULL, says each qualified student will receive at least $500 applied toward their tuition or other educational expenses.

Williston State Expanding Free Tuition Program to Montana

A small two-year college in northwestern North Dakota that offers free tuition to high-school graduates in the area is expanding the program to Montana. Williston State College began the program two years ago to increase the number of professionals such as nurses and accountants in the booming oil patch. This year it was expanded to the North Dakota counties of Burke, Divide, McKenzie and Mountrail. Beginning next fall, the program will also be offered in Montana's Daniels, Richland, Roosevelt, Sheridan, and Valley counties, opening the program to an additional 600 high school seniors, according to John Miller, the college's acting president.

College of Saint Mary Reduces Student Tuition 33 Percent To Take a Stand Against the Trend of Rising Tuition Costs

In an attempt to stem the national trend of rising post-secondary education tuition costs, the College of Saint Mary Board of Directors today announced a plan to lower tuition costs by 33 percent for all of the university’s undergraduate students. The board decision was announced today and cost savings will be shared among all undergraduate students, continuing and new. Tuition will be reduced by $10,000 and continuing students should see a reduction in out-of-pocket costs of at least $1,000 each after grants and scholarships.

Williston State College Extends Free Tuition Program

A Williston State College program that offers free tuition and fees to high school graduates in the North Dakota oil patch has pushed enrollments at the school to record highs, and the small two-year school is extending the effort thanks to a new infusion of cash. The college began the Williams County Graduate Scholarship program two years ago to increase the number of professionals such as nurses and accountants in the booming oil patch. It was funded mainly by $1 million from the Alva J. Field Memorial Trust and $500,000 from the state.

Walton Foundation Gives $10M to University of the Ozarks

The University of the Ozarks has received $10 million from the Walton Family Foundation to fund scholarships for students. The gift announced Monday will create an endowment for the Frontier Scholarship Program, which will benefit students from low- and middle-income families. School leaders say the program will ensure that a college education is attainable for students of all income levels.

Investment return of 3.4% brings Yale endowment value to $25.4 billion

Yale’s endowment earned a 3.4% investment return for the year ending June 30, 2016. The endowment value declined from $25.6 billion on June 30, 2015, to $25.4 billion on June 30, 2016, net of spending that supports faculty salaries, student scholarships, and other expenses. Spending from the endowment for Yale’s 2017 fiscal year is projected to be $1.2 billion.

$60 million gift names USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work

Suzanne Dworak-Peck has donated $60 million to endow and name the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. The gift is one of the largest contributions from an individual to a school of its kind. The USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work educates one of every 20 master’s level social workers in the U.S. and has an alumni network of 15,000.
