Michigan, Harvard Focus On Detroit Poverty, Opioid Problems

Harvard University and the University of Michigan are working together to deal with opioid addiction and poverty in Detroit. The universities teaming up will pair Harvard's statistical and computational research into forces influencing economic success or failure with Michigan's Poverty Solutions Initiative. The universities are planning national summits in the Boston and Detroit areas.

A partnership between Fairmont State University, Aladdin Food Services and the Wesley Foundation is providing students on campus with three or four hot lunches weekly. The Foundation is located across the street from the University and has provided food to hungry students for years.

Bilingual Certificates Proposed For Oklahoma Diplomas

Oklahoma high school graduates who are fluent in more than one language may have a special seal added to their transcripts or diplomas. The Oklahoma Association for Bilingual Education is proposing that the state add this Seal of Biliteracy for students who can speak English and at one other language proficiently.

US Adds A Strong 201K Jobs

There was an increase in hiring in the U.S. this past month with employers adding 201,000 jobs. The unemployment rate stayed near an 18-year low at 3.9 percent. William Paterson U Makes SAT And ACT Optional

William Paterson University has just made SAT and ACT optional for Fall 2019 Freshman Applicants. While the most of 2019-2020 student applicants are no longer required to submit SAT or ACT scores there are some exceptions. The University joins more than 1,000 colleges and universities that have adopted the test-optional policy or have eliminated them entirely.

Hard Alcohol Ban Ordered For Most US, Canada Fraternities

A hard liquor ban in going into effect at national and international fraternities. Affected fraternities have a year to prohibit drinks with an alcohol content of 15 percent or more from frat events and chapters. The one exception is if the alcohol is served by licensed third-party vendor.

Massacre Commission To Discuss Campus Police, Mental Illness

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission is slated to discuss the changes to the state’s mental health laws and the role of campus police officers.
