Family Says UNR Football Player Presumed Dead Died a Hero

The parents of a University of Nevada, Reno football player from Honolulu who is presumed to have drowned in Lake Tahoe say their son died trying to save others. Rescue crews called off their search for Marc Ma on Monday, but officials say efforts to recover his body will continue. Ma, 20, had been on a paddle board trip with several football players on Friday when the group encountered strong winds off Lake Tahoe's west shore. Ma's board was found adrift.

Texas Rangers Draft Henry Ford College Baseball Player Kyle Roberts in 5th Round

The Texas Rangers drafted Henry Ford College (HFC) baseball player Kyle Roberts in the 5th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. A left-handed pitcher for HFC, Roberts was the Rangers’ 159th overall pick. A 2014 alumnus of Allen Park High School, Roberts graduated with his associate degree in Business Administration last month from HFC. He was a member of the Hawks Academic Team for the winter 2016 semester.

LaGuardia Community College Awards Associate’s Degrees to More than 1,500 Graduates at 44th Commencement

More than 1,500 graduates celebrated earning their associate’s degrees at the 44th Commencement of LaGuardia Community College held earlier today. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, a long-time champion for higher education, gave the keynote address. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has been a dedicated advocate on behalf of LaGuardia Community College—having allocated $2.75 million to LaGuardia programs including the development of high-quality, customized technology-driven and entrepreneurial training center.

The Library of Congress Appoints its First Hispanic Poet Laureate

One of Librarian of Congress James H. Billington’s last official acts before his retirement in October was to announce the appointment of Juan Felipe Herrera as the Library’s 21st Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for 2015-2016. With that announcement, a historical milestone was reached. Herrera who succeeded Charles Wright as Poet Laureate is the first Hispanic poet to serve in the position.

University of New Mexico Installs Car Charging Stations

The University of New Mexico has installed two charging stations on its main campus so student commuters can charge electric vehicles. The school announced last week a charging station was installed at the Cornell Parking Structure and another one of the Yale Parking Structure. Each charging station can connect to two vehicles at a time. Officials say charging stations software will track usage, the number of charges, and the amount of energy used per charge.

UCF Hosting Blood Drives in Wake of Orlando Shooting

The University of Central Florida will be hosting several on-campus blood drives this week following the mass shooting in Orlando. In a statement on the school’s website UFC’s president John C. Hitt said in a statement on the school’s website that encouraged participation at the blood drives and will be visiting the blood drive sites Monday to greet and thank donors along with student body president Chris Clemente, Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White and UCF coaches and student athletes.

Study finds global legalization trial escalates elephant poaching

Two researchers who examined elephant poaching data and the ivory trade say policymakers who consider legalizing some illicit trade may be relying on a faulty theory that legalization makes black markets collapse. The admonition comes in a paper posted today by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Solomon Hsiang, a University of California, Berkeley, public policy professor and director of the campus’sGlobal Policy Lab, and Nitin Sekar, an ecologist at Princeton University.

CSUF Education Programs Sweep Accreditation Standards

Cal State Fullerton’s College of Education has received the highest possible rating for continued accreditation for all of its educator preparation programs from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). A joint accreditation team representing NCATE and CTC gave the college high marks across all of the standards that ensure educators are prepared for preschool through 12th-grade school settings.

13 Firefighters Hospitalized after Blaze at Newark College

Essex County College is closed following a fire that left more than a dozen firefighters hospitalized after suffering heat exhaustion. The campus is closed Monday because Sunday's fire left it without electricity. Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose tells NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1YmcAs0 ) workers reported a possible electrical fire in the sub-basement of a building. Officials say the building was evacuated and the fire was extinguished.

The lawsuit is factually inaccurate and legally baseless, and Yale will offer a vigorous defense. Yale always respects the privacy and confidentiality of all students involved in a disciplinary process. Yale’s procedures for addressing allegations of sexual misconduct are thorough and fair. Allegations are investigated by an impartial fact finder, heard by five trained members of the Yale community, and decided by the dean of the school in which the accused student is enrolled. Throughout the process, all parties have advisors, which can be legal counsel, and they can appeal a decision.

Maryland University System to Invest in Startup Companies

The University System of Maryland plans to establish a $25 million fund to invest in startup companies created by students, faculty and graduates. Multiple news organizations report that the Board of Regents committee approved the fund on Thursday. The fund would require the system to invest $10 million over the next four years, and the remainder would be raised from venture funds, state funds and other sources. That fund is intended to offer investments between $50,000 and $500,000.

Climate change could trigger tropical evacuations, researchers say

Solomon Hsiang, Chancellor’s Associate Professor of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, andAdam Sobel, a professor of applied physics and math at Columbia University, foresee dramatic population declines in Mexico, Central America, Africa, India and other tropical locales if ecosystems or humans move due to climate change. In their analysis, the pair used a model to demonstrate how climate dynamics in the tropics can dramatically magnify the consequences of climate change as it is experienced on the ground. This means even small climate changes can have dramatic impacts.
