50 Years After Student Massacre, Mexico Students Strike

Students at Mexico's National Autonomous University in Mexico City, Mexico's largest university, went on strike today. Students were demanding an end to violence by groups of thugs. These groups often register but don't attend classes, and on Monday, thugs attacked protesters from a university-affiliated high school who were demonstrating for free speech and against fees.

Bilingual Certificates Proposed For Oklahoma Diplomas

Oklahoma high school graduates who are fluent in more than one language may have a special seal added to their transcripts or diplomas. The Oklahoma Association for Bilingual Education is proposing that the state add this Seal of Biliteracy for students who can speak English and at one other language proficiently.

Cal State LA Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Chicano Studies Program

California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) established the first Chicano studies program in the nation 50 years ago. Back then, around four percent of students were Mexican American, and the program only had four courses. Valuing the history, culture and contributions of Mexican Americans, the program now offers over 150 courses.

President Donald Trump said his administration’s response to Hurricane Maria devastating Puerto Rico in 2017 was an “underappreciated great job” and that the government is ready for Hurricane Florence. Trump tweeted that “FEMA, First Responders and Law Enforcement are supplied and ready.”

Deal Gives Community College Graduates Shot At $10K Degrees

A deal between Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and Fayetteville State University (FSU) will allow GTCC graduates earn bachelor’s degrees for an amount not exceeding $10,000. The deal specifically assists graduates pursuing degrees in fire and emergency services administration, criminal justice, business administration, psychology and sociology.

College Pathways Program Renewed For Third Consecutive Year

For the third consecutive year, East Brunswick Board of Education has renewed their College Pathways Program with Middlesex County College (MCC). The program provides East Brunswick students the opportunity to earn both college and high school credit for high school courses approved to be at the same level of college courses at MCC.

Florence Rolls Ashore In Carolinas

Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina knocking out power to a half-million businesses and homes and ripping apart buildings with its 90 mph winds. Reports have more than 60 people needed to be pulled from a motel that collapsed during the storm.

Mexico 'Evaluating' US Offer To Pay For Deporting Migrants

While Mexico’s Interior Department has said that no agreement has been reached yet, its government is currently “evaluating” an offer from the U.S. to pay for returning foreign migrants in Mexico to their home countries. If accepted, this offer would mainly impact Central American migrants, many of whom attempt to cross the U.S. border by using Mexico as a base.

Feed the Children Responds To Hurricane Florence Needs

The nonprofit Feed the Children along with its local agencies and corporate partners are working together to allocate shipments of disaster relief supplies, water and food to East Coast residents impacted by Hurricane Florence. Supplies include ready to eat food, soups and snacks; beverages; paper goods; cleaning supplies; cereal; flashlights; and batteries.
