Lehman College To Present “Young Puerto Rican Filmmakers”

Lehman College School of Arts & Humanities is presenting “Young Puerto Rican Filmmakers” on Thursday October 4. Held at the Studio Theater, the 75-minute program features a selection of short films and music videos directed by recent graduates and current students of the University of Puerto Rico–Mayagüez (UPRM) Film Certificate program.

A second accuser has come forward to describe an alleged unwanted sexual encounter with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Bill Cosby’s sentencing could mean the 81-year-old comedian could be sent home on probation or could serve as much as 30 years in prison. As many as 8,000 people may need to be evacuated because of possible flooding near South Carolina’s Coast.

Cuomo Expands Puerto Rico Recovery, Rebuilding Initiative

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is expanding the highly successful New York stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative. They will be deploying 500 more SUNY and CUNY student volunteers and launching a new disaster mental health initiative. SUNY and CUNY volunteers will be cleaning, repairing and restoring damaged homes.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was interviewed on Fox News, stating that he has never sexually assaulted anyone. President Donald Trump addresses the United Nations today, as will Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. After speculation about whether or not his job was in jeopardy, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will be having a meeting with Trump later in the week.

Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez Becomes US Citizen

Seattle Mariners’ pitcher Felix Hernandez was among 74 people who became naturalized U.S. citizens at a ceremony on Monday. Originally from Venezuela, Hernandez said the strife in Venezuela is one of the reasons he became a U.S. citizen and that he would like to bring his parents to the United States.

Gloria And Emilio Estefan Receive Gershwin Prize

The Library of Congress has named international superstars Emilio and Gloria Estefan as recipients of the Gershwin Prize for popular song. For the first time in history the award is honoring a married couple and musicians-songwriters of Hispanic descent. The Estefans have been influential leaders infusing rich cultural diversity into the American musical experience.

Penn State Officials Confirm Case Of Bacterial Meningitis

A case of bacterial meningitis has been confirmed at Penn State University. Bacterial meningitis’ symptoms can include stiff neck, headache and fever, and can cause inflammation of the brain. Anyone who suspects having bacterial meningitis should contact University Health Services' Advice Nurse service.

U of Virginia Earns NSF $3M Grant

The University of Virginia School (UVA) of Engineering has earned a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to launch a graduate program in cyber-physical systems. UVA Engineering’s Link Lab is developing a new program that trains graduate students in making discoveries that can be translated into new technologies, products and services.

UCF Extends In-State Tuition To Students From Puerto Rico

The University of Central Florida’s trustees voted to waive out-of-state fees for students from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands who came to the school after Hurricane Maria. This in-state tuition offer has been extended through 2023. Students must remain enrolled continuously in order to quality.

US And Cuba Institutes Create First Joint Biotech Venture

U.S. and Cuban research institutes are creating the first joint U.S.-Cuban biotech venture. Headquartered in Cuba the new initiative aims to bring new cancer therapies to U.S. patients. The Roswell Park Cancer Institute of Buffalo, New York and Cuba’s Center for Molecular Immunology established the Innovative Immunotherapy Alliance SA after the historic 2014 U.S.-Cuban detente.

HCCC Selected For NJ Tuition-Free Pilot Program

Hudson County Community College has recently been named as one of 13 community colleges in New Jersey to pilot the New Jersey Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) program. The CCOG program will allow the school to offer both new and current students from low-income families to attend community college tuition free.
