Still Far Off, Michael A Growing Menace To Florida Panhandle

Tropical Storm Michael, which is off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is expected to become a hurricane and by midweek strike in the Florida Panhandle. Florida’s governor, Rick Scott, has issued an order for a state of emergency specifically for 26 counties.

Kansas State Ending Merit-Based Putnam Scholarships

Kansas State University is no longer offering the $9,000 per year Putnam Scholarship to students. A student could have the Putnam Scholarship for four years. The move is because Kansas State is shifting from totally merit-based scholarships to need plus merit-based ones.

Musk $480K Donation To Pay For Flint Schools Water Filtration Systems

The Musk Foundation is donating $480,000 to allow schools in Flint, Michigan, to install ultraviolet water filtration systems to their drinking fountains. These new systems are expected to be installed at all 12 of the schools, as well as the district’s administration building by the end of January.

UN Urges Venezuela To Probe Opposition Politician's Death

The UN has urged the investigation into the death of Fernando Alban, an opposition councilman who was jailed by Venezuela's intelligence police on allegations that he plotted to kill President Nicolas Maduro. According to Venezuelan officials, Alban committed suicide when he leapt from the 10th floor of the state police agency’s headquarters.

Kent State University spent about $65,000 on security for a demonstration and counter-protest over gun rights. The cost included additional campus police an dispatchers, as well as supplies and communications. The demonstration and counter-protest were reported to be mostly peaceful.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded nearly $3 million in supplemental funding for financially strapped students in North and South Carolina that were affected by Hurricane Florence. Almost $2 million in relief is for North Carolina students while more than $800,000 is to aid South Carolina students.

Immigrants Face Hurdles To Prove Abuse By US Agents

Two sisters from Guatemala, ages 17 and 19, have alleged that a Border Patrol agent conducted an improper strip search involving the agent touching their genitals. The agent denied the claims, insisting that he only fingerprinted them, and government investigators sided with the agent.

Couple Pledge $1M To Cancer Research At University

The University of Toledo is going to be expanding its pancreatic cancer research thanks to a $1 million gift from, Hal and Susan Fetterman, a couple from Ohio. The money is setting up the UTMC Pancreatic Cancer Research Innovation Fund and honors Hal Fetterman's sister, Joyce Schwyn, and three friends all of whom died from pancreatic cancer.

North Carolina Lawmakers Approve $400M In Florence Spending

North Carolina lawmakers have approved spending $400 million to aid communities and people impacted by Hurricane Florence. An additional $450 million is being set aside for upcoming needs. Moneys include $95 million for public schools, universities and community colleges. About $7 million will help college and university students remain enrolled.

WCC Receives Largest Federal Grant In School’s History

Westchester Community College has just received the largest federal grant in their history. The $2.7 million grant is designed to transform student experience. Over the next five years, the funds will be awarded to help students succeed academically, find their future careers and continue on the education path.
