Students To Pay Hundreds More Per Semester To Attend Southern University System [Education News]

Southern University System students in Louisiana will pay hundreds of dollars more a semester in the upcoming school year, to generate $4.2 million for campuses, under a package of fee hikes approved by the system governing board Thursday. Fee increases on students are rankling lawmakers, who protected Louisiana's colleges from budget cuts for the 2018-19 school year by renewing part of an expiring sales tax last month.

Tuition Rising At 21 Of Oklahoma's 25 Higher Education Institutions

Tuition will increase at 21 of Oklahoma's 25 higher education institutions. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education on Thursday approved tuition and fees for each of the state's colleges and universities. Only the University of Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Eastern Oklahoma State College and Murray State College did not seek a tuition increase.

College Savings Plan Accounts Breached, $1.4 Million Taken [Education News]

State Treasurer Denise Nappier announced Wednesday that 21 Connecticut Higher Education Trust college savings accounts were recently breached, resulting in more than $1.4 million in unauthorized withdrawals. Nappier said her office was advised of the breach by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing Inc., the program manager for the CHET Direct 529 savings plan.

Cal State LA Awarded $1M Grant To Enhance Diversity [Education News]

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to enhance diversity and inclusion for California students in science. The grant is slated to start the Science Faculty for Inclusive Excellence and Transformation project to support students from historically underrepresented communities who are first generations and are working adults with families.

App Offering $10,000 Scholarship [Education News]

Bellhops, a tech-enabled moving service, announced that it will give away one $10,000 college scholarship. The company, which began as a college-based dorm-moving service in 2011, grew into a full-service moving provider powered by an online app. However, Bellhops' cofounder and president, Cam Doody, says the company hasn't forgotten where it started.

Torsella said Monday the program will be open to any child starting next year who is a Pennsylvania resident at birth or adopted by a Pennsylvania family. Parents will be notified about the account set up for them.

U Of Michigan To Raise In-State Tuition By 2.9 Percent [Education News]

The University of Michigan Board of Regents has approved a 2.9 percent increase for in-state undergraduate tuition. The increase, approved 7-1 Thursday, means those students will pay $436 extra per year. Freshman tuition and fees for Michigan residents next fall will be $15,262. The regents also voted to raise tuition for nonresidents by 3.9 percent, or $1,874, to $49,326 per year.
