Florida Legislators Agree To Boost College Financial Aid [Education News]

Florida's top performing high school students may get a boost in help for college under a bill passed by the Florida Legislature. Both the House and Senate on Monday passed a sweeping higher education bill that would permanently increase the amount of money provided under the state's popular Bright Futures scholarship. It heads to the desk of Gov. Rick Scott, who vetoed a similar bill last year.

Foundation Seeks To Retract $100M Pledge To U Of Chicago [Education News]

A family that in 2015 pledged $100 million to the University of Chicago is suing to void its commitment, saying the school failed to live up to its promises. The lawsuit by The Thomas L. Pearson and The Pearson Family Foundation was filed last month in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma. The foundation wants a judge to void the deal and recoup for it nearly $23 million already given the university to establish The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts.

Program Offers $20 Million In Scholarships To Immigrants [Education News]

In an effort help young immigrants who are living in the country illegally earn a college degree, a New Hampshire university announced Thursday it is teaming up with two organizations to offer $20 million in scholarships. Southern New Hampshire University, with support from The Shapiro Foundation and TheDream.US, said its program would reach 1,000 students over the next five years who are part of DACA.

Bill Dies, Forced Public Comment For Higher Education Tuition Raises

A bill that would force colleges and universities to allow public comments before raising tuition has been voted down in the Virginia Senate. The Virginian-Pilot reports the bill was defeated Tuesday by a Senate committee's 6-4 vote after it passed unanimously through the House. It would have forced public schools to give a formal opportunity for comment at a board meeting before increasing tuition.

Higher Education Institution Offers Scholarships To Fallen Officer's Daughters

An Ohio university has offered full four-year scholarships to the children of a police officer fatally shot while responding to a 911 hang-up call. A representative from Otterbein University announced the scholarships to all three of Officer Eric Joering's daughters during a Westerville City Council meeting Tuesday evening. Council members voted unanimously at the same meeting to retire the officer's K-9 partner, Sam, to live with the Joering family.

$10M Donation To Wheaton Ties For Largest In Higher Education Institution’s History

Wheaton College in Massachusetts announced Thursday that it's receiving of the largest donations in its 183-year history. The school said it received a $10 million commitment from the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation. Wheaton's previous largest gift was $10 million from the family that founded the Mars candy company, received during a fundraising campaign that ended in 2000.

Marshall University Receives $2.1M Grant For Obesity Study [Education News]

Marshall University has received a $2.1 million federal grant to study obesity-related disorders. U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins announced the U.S. Health and Human Services grant. He said in a news release it will be used to help fund research at the university's Appalachian Center for Cellular Transport in Obesity-Related Disorders.

UW-Madison: Free Tuition For Families Making Less Than $56K [Education News]

New in-state University of Wisconsin-Madison students from low-to-moderate income families will get free tuition and fees for four years under a new program, university officials announced Thursday. The initiative, dubbed "Bucky's Tuition Promise," guarantees free tuition and no fees for eight semesters for incoming freshmen and four semesters for transfer students who come from homes making no more than $56,000 annually. The program is set to begin this fall.

University Awards $21.5M Contract for Green Upgrades [Education News]

The University of Maryland has awarded a $21.5 million contract for green upgrades to its College Park campus. The university's director of engineering and efficiency, Mary-Ann Ibeziako, says in a press release the upgrades are meant to save the university money and improve energy efficiency. The improvements include energy efficient light installation and new heating, ventilating and air conditioning controls.
