Henry Ford College Nursing Students Hold Fundraisers for Belize Humanitarian Trip in December

A team of 14 Henry Ford College (HFC) nursing students and faculty members are holding fundraisers in late July and August to aid in funding their humanitarian trip to Belize on a mission of mercy in late December through International Service Learning (ISL). The nursing students will provide acute medical care and health education to vulnerable populations in Belize, a country located on the eastern coast of Central America. Belize is the only country in Central America where the official language is English.

University of Louisville Awarded Pediatric Research Grant

Norton Healthcare is giving a $1.25 million grant to the University of Louisville for pediatric research. About $400,000 will go to the Kosair Children's Hospital Research Institute for research into multi-organ diseases that stem from diabetes or obesity; $300,000 will go to the Child and Adolescent Health Research Design and Support Unit to reduce the number of psychiatric prescriptions that give too much medicine to children; and $250,000 will go to the University of Louisville Autism Center at Kosair Charities.

Oklahoma State Receives $11.3 Million for Children's Health

An $11.3 million grant has been awarded to Oklahoma State University to create a program designed to eliminate disparities in children's health due to race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. The grant from the National Institutes of Health will create the Children's Health Equity Solutions Center through OSU's Center for Health Sciences. The research will be conducted by a multi-institutional group of OSU and University of Oklahoma-Tulsa researchers.

Initial site work begins on new home for UofL pediatric health care

On July 18, the University of Louisville Foundation will begin construction on a new, 170,000-square-foot pediatric medical office building. The building will be designed to house all of the UofL Physicians pediatric specialty clinical practices, with a large general pediatrics location on the ground floor. The eight-story building will have seven clinical floors, plus a lab, pharmacy and radiology services, as well as a rooftop garden and conference area.

William Carey Will Offer School of Pharmacy in Biloxi

William Carey University plans to open a school of pharmacy at its campus in Biloxi. The school would be the second pharmacy program in the state. Ole Miss has a pharmacy school on its Oxford campus. William Carey President Tommy King said Friday the pharmacy school is a dream come true for the university. He said it makes sense on the Coast.

UCF Hosting Blood Drives in Wake of Orlando Shooting

The University of Central Florida will be hosting several on-campus blood drives this week following the mass shooting in Orlando. In a statement on the school’s website UFC’s president John C. Hitt said in a statement on the school’s website that encouraged participation at the blood drives and will be visiting the blood drive sites Monday to greet and thank donors along with student body president Chris Clemente, Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White and UCF coaches and student athletes.
