Mumps Cases on the Rise at the University of Missouri

The number of confirmed mumps cases at the University of Missouri is growing amid a national rise in cases. The university plans to provide an update each Wednesday. As of Nov. 9, the university had recorded 17 cases since the beginning of the fall semester. The school says all the students received the required two doses of a vaccine that protects against mumps, as well as measles and rubella.

13 Cases of Mumps Now Confirmed at SUNY New Paltz

Thirteen cases of mumps have now been confirmed at the State University of New York at New Paltz. The Daily Freeman of Kingston (http://bit.ly/2fHXZGJ ) reports that the 13 cases include one athletics staff member at the Hudson Valley school and several swim team members. County health officials learned of the outbreak a month ago.

Exchange Illinois St. Researcher in War Against Mosquitoes

In the war against disease-carrying mosquitoes, Steven Juliano considers himself part of the intelligence brigade. Juliano has received a three-year, $435,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the best time in a mosquito's life cycle to kill them without the unintended consequences of surviving mosquitoes becoming stronger or even more numerous — what's called "overcompensation." The four mosquitoes targeted in Juliano's research carry viruses that cause diseases such as Zika, West Nile encephalitis, LaCrosse encephalitis, yellow fever and dengue.

8 Hudson Valley University Swimmers Come Down with Mumps

Officials at a Hudson Valley university say eight members of the school's intercollegiate swimming program have come down with the mumps. Health officials with the State University of New York at New Paltz confirmed the mumps cases in a letter sent on Monday evening to users of the school's athletic facilities. Officials say all swim practices and workouts have been suspended "out of an abundance of caution" to see if anyone else has the mumps.

NMSU Launches Cancer Study Targeting Hispanic Mothers

New Mexico State University's College of Health and Social Services has launched a study to examine the impact of cancer on Hispanic families and to develop programs targeting Latinas. Researchers in the university's Department of Public Health Sciences said this week they are looking for Hispanic mothers who have been diagnosed with cancer in the past two years as participants for the study.

Wayne State U Seeks to Improve Health of Young People with HIV

A team of researchers led by Wayne State University expects to get $15.7 million over five years for work related to the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults with HIV or at risk for HIV infection. The funding for the "Scale it Up" project is from the National Institute of Child and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health.

Nebraska Methodist College Achieves Record Enrollment for Fall 2016

Nebraska Methodist College has 1,088 students for the fall of 2016, an increase of 14 percent from two years prior. First-time first-year students have also increased by 40 percent. Factors that contributed to this growth include the advent of programs like the Master in Occupational Therapy and the debuted an MBA in Healthcare.

UConn Plans New Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling

The University of Connecticut is planning a new graduate program designed to prepare students to become genetic counselors who interpret the results of a genetic test and advise patients about potential health risks and ways to mitigate those risks.The program is being funded by a grant of more than $300,000 from the University.

New University Medical Program Seeks to Diversify Physicians in Omaha

Two local University of Nebraska institutions have teamed up to create a program to diversify Omaha's physician population. The Urban Health Opportunities Program will provide tuition and other benefits to undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha who want to be doctors in Omaha, particularly in the northeast and southeast parts of the city.

Learning Ally announces College Success Program for blind or visually impaired college students

According to the National Federation of the Blind, of the 1.3 million legally blind individuals in the U.S., only 29 percent go to college, while only 12 percent earn a Bachelor's Degree or higher. With these challenges in mind, Learning Ally recently launched its College Success Program (CSP) specifically for students attending institutions of higher education who are blind or visually impaired.
