NIH Awards Professor 2nd $1.3M Grant For Lung Disease Study [Education News]

A Hampton University professor has been awarded another grant to study lung disease. The Daily Press reported Monday that the chair of the pharmaceutical sciences department, Neelam Azad, received her second $1.3 million independent investigator award from the National Institutes of Health. The goal is to use traditional molecular biology techniques, along with less conventional methods, to look at markers for pulmonary fibrosis.

Colleges Face Petitions, Protests To Split With ICE [Education News]

Some colleges are being pressured to cut ties with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement amid public outcries over the separation of migrant families along the nation's southern border. Northeastern University, Johns Hopkins University and Vermont's system of public colleges have contracts with ICE totaling about $4 million this year for research and training services.

ESPN Hires Former UCLA Coach Mora As College Studio Analyst [Education News]

Former UCLA coach Jim Mora is joining ESPN as a college football analyst, filling the role Chip Kelly held last season at the network before replacing Mora as coach of the Bruins. ESPN announced Tuesday that it added Mora and re-signed college football analyst Joey Galloway to a multiyear deal. Mora coached at UCLA from 2012-17.

Tufts, MMC Renew Agreement To Bring Med Students To Maine [Education News]

Maine Medical Center and Tufts University have renewed a 10-year agreement aimed at bringing medical students to Maine, where many will remain to practice. Maine Medical Center CEO Rich Petersen said Wednesday the agreement expands on the program that launched in 2008 with a shared vision of addressing Maine's physician shortage and ensuring Maine students have an equal opportunity to pursue a medical education.

Students who are defrauded by their schools would have a harder time getting their federal loans erased under new rules proposed by the Trump administration Wednesday. The proposal, which aims to replace a set of Obama-era rules that were never implemented, drew applause from the for-profit industry but sharp criticism from advocacy groups that represent student borrowers.

The parents of one of the 20 children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting are asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to remove hateful and harassing comments posted by conspiracy theorists who say the shooting never happened. Leonard Pozner and Veronique De La Rosa wrote Zuckerberg a letter published on Wednesday in The Guardian .

California Students Flocking To Universities In Arizona [Education News]

Four of the top five schools where California freshmen go out of state are in Arizona, according to 2016 data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Mouse Engineered, A Type Of Cancer

The University of Minnesota has received over $1 million in revenue over the last 15 years from a mouse that was engineered to help treat a type of cancer. Researchers use the mouse to study the genetics of a bone marrow cancer called multiple myeloma and create better genetic testing for myeloma therapy, Minnesota Daily reported . The mouse's plasma cells are used an antibodies to detect cancer cells.
