UC Davis Awarded $4.9M Grant For Free Open Textbook Program

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $4.9 million grant for the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to develop a free open textbooks program for select subjects. Funded by the Congress FY 2018 omnibus spending bill, UC Davis will lead collaboration among 12 campuses.

Under the new Chancellor’s Fellows Program, the University of Illinois-Chicago will be able to offer the state’s top students a free ride. The program will be funded with the university’s share of $25 million, which is set aside by the state for merit scholarships.

The nonprofit medical research organization Chan Zuckerberg Biohub (CZ Biohub) has awarded $13.7 million to new collaborative health research. Over the next three year seven teams from UC Berkeley, UCSF, and Stanford scientists, physicians and engineers will work on initiative biomedical research.

Kent State University spent about $65,000 on security for a demonstration and counter-protest over gun rights. The cost included additional campus police an dispatchers, as well as supplies and communications. The demonstration and counter-protest were reported to be mostly peaceful.

World War II veteran Donates $2M For College Scholarships

Students from Bayonne High School looking to go into a career in the field of STEM may soon have a new scholarship option. Thanks to a $2 donation from a World War II veteran, students may soon have scholarships available through the William Gawor Perpetual Scholarship Fund. This fund is currently pending court approval.

Several Supreme Court justices expressed concerns about the government’s reading of immigration law, regarding detaining certain immigrants after they’ve served their sentences for committing crimes in the U.S. The immigrants are mostly green-card holders and say that they should get hearings to argue for their release while deportation proceedings against them are ongoing.

Community colleges in San Diego and Imperial counties are embarking on an ‘Undocumented Students Week of Action’ starting October 15 to express support for DREAMers and urge Congress to create a pathway to citizenship. California is home to more than 220,000 residents currently protected through the DACA program.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded nearly $3 million in supplemental funding for financially strapped students in North and South Carolina that were affected by Hurricane Florence.
