Illinois is taking a new approach to encourage high school students to attend in-state universities and colleges. By creating a new merit-based scholarship specifically for high school graduates, the state hopes to improve undergraduate enrollment at public universities, which fell more than 8 percent between 2011 and 2016.
Applications for the 2018 Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit are currently being accepted in Maryland. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible provided they have at least $20,000 in student loan debt, as well as at least $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt remaining.
Church’s Chicken will be assisting more than 200 high school students across the country through its 2018-2019 Church’s Scholars Program. Mississippi State University is guaranteeing free tuition for Mississippi National Guard members studying full time for an undergraduate degree. University President Mark Keenum and National Guard commander Maj. Gen. Janson "Durr" Boyles signed the agreement Tuesday. University spokesman Sid Salter says Mississippi State receives $2,250 per guard member for tuition already.
Pharmaceutical manufacturer Mallinckrodt has announced plans to spend up to $10 million over five years to fund research at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the partnership will fund projects that have a focus on rare diseases. Mallinckrodt's Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Steven Romano, says many underserved patients have "few, if any, therapeutic options."
The University of Wyoming has received a $2.5 million gift to support its science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs. The university says the money from alumnus David D. Le Norman will be matched by the state for a total of $5 million. Le Norman is founder of Le Norman Energy and a number of other successful companies.
