Small Private Colleges Attracting Fewer Students [Education News]

Small, liberal arts college administrators are growing increasingly concerned as their enrollment numbers fall. The Boston Globe reports undergraduate enrollment trends at 118 four-year private colleges in the region show one out of five of those colleges have had an enrollment drop of at least 10 percent. Newbury College in Brookline is facing the most severe drop, with its enrollment declining 86 percent over 20 years.

The Trump administration's decision to ask people about their citizenship in the 2020 census set off worries among Democrats that immigrants will dodge the survey altogether, diluting political representation for states that tend to vote Democratic and robbing many communities of federal dollars. President Donald Trump signed a $1.3 trillion spending measure Friday, just hours after declaring he was considering a veto. Trump said he was "very disappointed" in the package, in part because it did not fully fund his plans for a border wall with Mexico and did not address some 700,000 "Dreamer" immigrants who are now protected from deportation under a program that he has moved to eliminate.

Maryland School Shooting Victim Has Died [Education News]

A teenage girl who was shot when a classmate opened fire inside their Maryland high school has died, authorities said Friday. The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said Jaelynn Willey died at 11:34 p.m. Thursday. Earlier that night, her family said she would be taken off life support at the University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center.
