Fallen Bridge: 'Stress Test' Preceded Collapse That Killed 6 [Education News]

An innovative pedestrian bridge being built at Florida International University had been put to a "stress test" and its cables were being tightened when it collapsed over traffic, killing six people and sending 10 to a hospital, authorities said. Two workers were on the 950-ton bridge when it pancaked on top of vehicles waiting at a stoplight.

Pedestrian Bridge Collapses At University; Several Hurt [Education News]

A newly-installed pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday at Florida International University, trapping at least five vehicles underneath. Live television reports showed several people loaded onto ambulances immediately after the collapse. There was no immediate report of injuries or any fatalities from authorities. The 950-ton span was installed on Saturday.

Upcoming SUNY Orange Job Fair And Tips For Attendees [Education Job News]

After the success of its 2017 job fair, which attracted close to 400 job seekers and more than 80 employers, SUNY Orange is hosting its 2018 job fair on April 12. The fair will run from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm ET and will be held at the Niddletown campus in the Physical Education Building, which is located on East Conkling Avenue.

Police: Report Of Shots Fired On Northwestern Campus A Hoax [Education News]

A report of a gunman at a Northwestern University residence hall and shots fired was a hoax, a suburban Chicago police official said Wednesday. Evanston Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew said a call to police reporting shots fired was a "swatting" hoax. The term describes when someone calls in a false report in the hopes of prompting a SWAT team to respond.

Adults: It's Your Move, Students Say After Historic Walkouts [Education News]

In a wave of protests one historian called the largest of its kind in American history, tens of thousands of students walked out of their classrooms Wednesday to demand action on gun violence and school safety. The demonstrations extended from Maine to Hawaii as students joined the youth-led surge of activism set off by the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

House Backs School Safety Bill In Florida Shooting Response [Breaking Education News]

The House overwhelmingly approved a bill to improve school safety Wednesday, the first gun-related action by Congress since the shooting that left 17 dead at a Florida high school. The bill authorizes $500 million over 10 years for grants to improve training and coordination between schools and local law enforcement and help identify signs of potential violence before they occur.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos got a less than ringing endorsement from the White House after a pair of uncomfortable television interviews raised questions about her commitment to help underperforming schools and support for President Donald Trump's proposal to curb school violence. In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes," DeVos admitted that she had not visited low-performing schools to understand their needs.

Pilot In NYC Crash Called 'Mayday,' Cited Engine Failure [Beyond Education]

A pilot whose helicopter went down in Manhattan's East River, killing five passengers, says in an emergency radio transmission that he had engine failure. The pilot is heard saying "Mayday, mayday, mayday" during the crash on Sunday night. The person at the other end of the transmission had trouble making out what the pilot was saying.
